A group of suspects attempted a robbery at an indoor swap meet in Fontana, but their plan was thwarted when a security guard shot and killed one suspect, leading the others to flee. The incident unfolded last Friday afternoon at the Fontana Indoor Swap Meet on Sierra Avenue. The suspects, donned in dark hoodies and ski masks, barged into the premises, with one assaulting the armed security guard while another tried to steal from a glass jewelry case.
During the chaos, the security guard defended himself, resulting in the death of one suspect identified as Roy Ezell Davis, a 24-year-old from Compton. Fortunately, the guard, who was licensed to carry a firearm, survived the attack and was discharged from the hospital after treatment. The remaining suspects managed to escape without any loot, leaving Fontana Police Department detectives on a mission to track them down.
Fontana Police Sgt. Patrick Mackey urged potential witnesses to step forward with any helpful information, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in solving such crimes. Despite the incident, some locals like Juan Dominguez, responsible for monitoring the shopping center’s parking lot, expressed confidence in the community and law enforcement to bring the culprits to justice.
However, Ciro Brito, the general manager of Leo’s Restaurant in the same shopping center, voiced concerns about safety following a series of recent robberies in the area. Brito feared that such criminal activities could deter customers, already struggling due to economic challenges. He hoped for swift arrests to restore a sense of security and normalcy in the community.
The police have not disclosed the exact number of recent robberies in the shopping center or any potential links to the swap meet incident. They urged anyone with relevant information to contact the Fontana Police Department’s anonymous tip line. The authorities continue to investigate the case, appealing for public cooperation in identifying and apprehending the remaining suspects.
The incident at the swap meet has raised security concerns among businesses in the area, with some fearing the impact on customer confidence and foot traffic. Despite these challenges, the community remains resilient, with law enforcement agencies working diligently to ensure safety and uphold the rule of law. The Fontana Indoor Swap Meet, typically bustling with activity, now stands as a symbol of vigilance and the need for continued support from residents and businesses to combat criminal activities.
