Statue of First Monday Trade Days Founder Unveiled in Canton

A statue honoring Henry Lewis, the developer of Canton First Monday Trade Days, now stands proudly at the Arbor Entrance of the event in Canton, Texas. Lewis, a visionary figure in the community, served as the mayor of Canton and played a pivotal role in expanding the trade days from five acres to 25.

Described as a man with foresight, Lewis’s daughter, Martha Jane Wallace, fondly remembers her father’s belief in the potential of First Monday Trade Days. His legacy lives on as the statue captures him holding a silver dollar, symbolizing his love for commerce and generosity in giving a silver dollar with every car sale.

Jeff Smith, a close friend of Lewis, reminisced about Lewis’s welcoming nature, always greeting people with open hands. The sculptor of the statue, Bridgette Mongeon, shared insights into the design process, aiming to create a piece that would inspire and draw people in, reflecting Lewis’s inviting personality.

Despite Lewis’s passing during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, his family never held a formal funeral. Now, five years later, the statue stands as a tribute to his contributions to Canton and First Monday Trade Days, ensuring that future generations remember his impact on the community.

Martha Lewis, Henry’s wife, expressed gratitude for his commitment to leaving Canton a better place than he found it. She reflected on his guidance and the void left by his absence, emphasizing the importance of honoring his memory.

As visitors to First Monday Trade Days pass by the statue, they are reminded of Henry Lewis’s dedication and vision that transformed the event into a significant cultural and economic hub in Canton. His enduring legacy serves as a testament to the impact one individual can have on a community, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.
