Jerry Elmer Fossum, a retired Lt. Col. of the USAF, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024, after bravely battling cancer. Born in 1935 in Albert Lea, MN, Jerry was a dedicated collegiate hockey player before embarking on a distinguished military career.
Graduating from St. Olaf College in 1957, Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Pat Johnsrud. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, he served in various roles across the globe, including Japan and Texas, before retiring in 1979 from Gunter Air Force Station.
Reflecting on his military service, Jerry expressed gratitude for the Air Force’s opportunities and his commitment to serving his country. Following retirement, he worked with the AL Department of Economic and Community Affairs and pursued his passion for antiques at the Eastbrook Flea Market in Montgomery, AL.
Aside from his professional endeavors, Jerry enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting and fishing, traveling to different parts of the world with his wife, Pat, who was a world champion triathlete. He actively participated in the State of Alabama Senior Olympics and engaged with local sports clubs.
Known for his storytelling and competitive spirit, Jerry cherished time with his family, surviving his wife of 66 years, Pat, and their two children, Scott Fossum and Lynn Fossum. Friends and family were invited to celebrate Jerry’s life on March 30, 2024, in Montgomery, AL.
Throughout his life, Jerry exemplified dedication, leadership, and a deep love for his family and country. His legacy will be remembered by those whose lives he touched, both in the military and civilian communities.
As we bid farewell to a remarkable individual, Jerry Fossum’s impact on his community and beyond will continue to resonate, leaving a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
