Red Hot Chili Peppers, iconic figures in the Los Angeles music scene for four decades, marked a memorable evening at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Benefit. The return of guitarist John Frusciante saw the band soar with their latest number one album, Unlimited Love, and a Global Stadium Tour that included a stop at SoFi Stadium. Amidst major festival performances, the RHCP graced an intimate show at the benefit for bassist Flea’s music conservatory, a tradition they upheld from the previous year. The exclusive event drew around 300 guests, with actor/comedian JB Smoove as the host, and the talented King Princess as the opening act.
Chad Smith, the RHCP’s drummer for over three decades, not only shines in large stadiums but also thrives in more intimate settings. Recently showcasing his skills at Aviator Nation in Malibu and frequenting the Baked Potato with his band, the Bombastic Meatbats, Smith’s versatility and passion for music are evident. At the benefit, he brought his A-game using his latest tour kit, captivating the audience with his dynamic beats.
The band’s setlist was a blend of nostalgia and freshness, featuring gems like The Ramones’ “Havana Affair” and the rare “Out In L.A.” The latter, a throwback to their debut album era with original drummer Jack Irons, delighted fans. Hits like “Californication,” “Tell Me Baby,” and “By The Way” resonated with the audience, while newer tracks like “Eddie” and “Watchu Thinkin’” from Unlimited Love added a contemporary flair. The performance culminated with the crowd-favorite “Snow ((Hey Oh))” from Stadium Arcadium, leaving fans in awe.
The benefit unfolded in the picturesque outdoor venue of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, a brainchild of Flea, Keith “Tree” Berry, and Peter Wise established in 2001. Initially offering private lessons, the school has evolved to offer diverse programs like summer classes, ensemble classes, and workshops. Situated in a historic 1930s brick building since 2016, the conservatory boasts a team of over 40 instructors and a dedicated board of directors, including Flea and Anthony Kiedis.
The event not only showcased the RHCP’s musical prowess but also highlighted the importance of music education and accessibility, a cause close to the band’s heart. As the night unfolded with electrifying performances and heartfelt melodies, it underscored the enduring legacy of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their commitment to nurturing the next generation of musical talent.
