Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, faced a parking challenge that prompted the opening of a new parking lot near the corner of Fairview Road and Monitor Way. This lot, constructed on the former tennis courts, aimed to ease the strain on parking caused by increased demand, especially with the upcoming campus housing. Rich Pagel, the vice president of Administrative Services, highlighted the contribution of external companies to fund this new lot, which added over 600 spaces to the existing parking inventory.
The new lot, with designated spaces for students, staff, and visitors, was welcomed by many students who found it more convenient compared to street parking. Despite recent increases in parking spaces on campus, students still expressed frustration over the ongoing parking challenges, with some resorting to arriving significantly early to secure a spot.
Chief of Campus Safety, Jim Rudy, acknowledged the imbalance in parking allocation, noting the underutilization of staff parking spaces during peak hours. This disparity further exacerbated the parking woes for students, leading some to seek alternatives off-campus or in residential areas to avoid the parking struggle.
Students emphasized the need for better planning and management of parking resources, especially during congested times. Suggestions included offering more evening and weekend classes to distribute parking demand more evenly throughout the week. The administration acknowledged these concerns and urged students to explore alternative transportation methods.
Recognizing the evolving needs of the student body, campus authorities are implementing changes to address the parking issues comprehensively. Plans for a new virtual parking management system and the elimination of traditional parking permit stations are in the pipeline for fall 2020. These initiatives aim to streamline parking processes and enhance the overall parking experience for students, staff, and visitors.
