New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is gearing up for Halloween with the return of the third annual ‘Trick-or-Streets’ program. This year, the city will host over 100 car-free events across all five boroughs throughout the month of October. The largest program to date, ‘Trick-or-Streets’ aims to bring Halloween-themed festivities to residents in a safe and engaging manner. The kickoff event is scheduled for October 5, with additional signature and partner events planned throughout the month.
Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced the extensive lineup of events, emphasizing the importance of utilizing streets to foster community engagement and enhance safety for children. ‘Trick-or-Streets’ is a part of the city’s broader initiatives to promote open spaces and public realm programming, allowing various groups and organizations to create car-free zones for Halloween celebrations. The program features a range of activities, including live music, circus performances, clown acts, and more.
The Halloween extravaganza will span across different neighborhoods, with signature events scheduled in each borough leading up to October 31. Locations such as Decatur Avenue in The Bronx, Fordham Plaza, Berry Street in Brooklyn, and Audubon Avenue in Manhattan will host Halloween-themed programming and performances. Additionally, partner events in Mid-October will offer a variety of festive activities for New Yorkers to enjoy.
As part of the ‘Trick-or-Streets’ initiative, various organizations and community partners are collaborating to transform streets into vibrant Halloween destinations. From pumpkin patches to live music, interactive workshops, arts and crafts, and spooky surprises, the events promise a fun-filled experience for kids and families. The program not only celebrates Halloween but also underscores the city’s commitment to creating safe and accessible public spaces for all residents.
State Senator Robert Jackson praised the initiative for providing a magical and secure environment for New Yorkers to enjoy the holiday. Partner organizations, including NYC Kidsfest, Broadway for Arts Education, and The Horticultural Society of New York, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events and the opportunity to engage with the community in a festive atmosphere.
Through ‘Trick-or-Streets,’ the city aims to build on its longstanding tradition of fostering street closures for recreational and educational purposes. By offering car-free zones for Halloween activities, New York City continues to prioritize the safety and enjoyment of its residents during festive occasions. The program reflects a collaborative effort to create a lively and secure environment for all, aligning with the city’s vision for inclusive and engaging public spaces.
With a rich history of community engagement and innovative programming, ‘Trick-or-Streets’ represents a creative approach to celebrating Halloween across diverse neighborhoods.
