Ingles Markets, a Black Mountain-based grocery chain, is expanding its footprint with a new store in the Fletcher area, located just south of Smiley’s Flea Market on U.S. 25. The development is part of Ingles’ ongoing efforts to cater to the growing demand for grocery services in the region.
The new Ingles store, situated on Hendersonville Highway across from Butler Bridge Road, has received approval for construction. The plans include a 94,296-square foot grocery store, along with a 19,870-square foot Ace Hardware store adjacent to it. Additionally, the site will feature a convenience store, gas pumps, and an automated car wash, in line with the standard offerings at modern Ingles locations.
The project encompasses an 11.2-acre site, with ample parking space provided through 280 parking spots. Furthermore, the development includes an additional 9,600-square-foot retail store and electric vehicle charging stations in the parking area, reflecting Ingles’ commitment to sustainability.
Ingles had to submit a traffic impact analysis for the site, which outlined two “right-in and right-out” access points to the property to optimize traffic flow. The primary entrance will be a signalized intersection directly across from Butler Bridge Road merging into U.S. Highway 25, ensuring smooth access for customers.
The construction progress indicates that the new Ingles store could open its doors soon, offering employment opportunities and convenient shopping options for residents in the Fletcher area. Ingles, with nearly 200 stores across six Southeast states, continues to be a key player in the regional grocery market.
Meanwhile, a recent incident at Lucy S. Herring Elementary School in Asheville raised concerns among parents regarding the handling of a lockdown situation. The incident involved a person experiencing a mental health crisis near the school, prompting a precautionary lockdown to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Following the incident, parents expressed unease over the lack of detailed information provided by the school and the Asheville Police Department. The communication gaps led to speculation and heightened anxiety within the community, emphasizing the need for transparent and timely updates during such events.
In response to the concerns, Asheville City Schools spokesperson April Dockery clarified the sequence of events, highlighting the swift action taken to secure the school premises. While the incident did not involve a direct threat to the school, the lockdown was a precautionary measure based on the proximity of the individual in crisis. The subsequent investigation revealed that the individual did not possess a firearm, dispelling initial concerns raised by reports of a gun threat.
