Henry County Secures Federal Funds for New Bus Route

During a recent meeting, Henry County officials confirmed the acceptance of federal funds that will pave the way for a new bus route connecting McDonough and Stockbridge. The county’s application for the funds was made in the fall of the previous year, setting the stage for significant transportation developments.

Aside from the exciting news of the bus route, Henry County will also benefit from funds allocated for two road projects. These projects encompass design enhancements for State Route 81 and Mill Road, promising improved infrastructure and connectivity within the region.

The new bus route is designed to link downtown McDonough with the Stockbridge Park & Ride Lot, enhancing public transit options for residents and commuters. This route will traverse key roads such as highway 155, Jonesboro Road, Oak Grove Road, and more, passing by essential locations like Piedmont Henry Hospital and city halls.

Henry County is set to receive substantial federal funding over three years to kickstart this bus service, totaling $4.8 million distributed evenly from 2023 to 2025. To access these funds, the county is required to provide a 20% local match, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure in the area.

Moreover, the county’s road projects are equally promising, with State Route 81 widening and Mill Road widening initiatives in the pipeline. These projects are crucial for improving road safety and traffic flow, with designated funds earmarked for design and scoping activities.

Unfortunately, not all proposed projects secured funding during this round of allocations. Projects such as East Atlanta Road resurfacing and Jodeco Road widening did not make the cut. However, the county remains optimistic about future opportunities to secure funding for these essential infrastructure projects in subsequent application cycles.

With the evolving landscape of transportation and infrastructure needs in Henry County, these developments signify a step towards enhanced connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. The strategic allocation of federal funds underscores the county’s commitment to sustainable growth and improved public amenities.

Looking ahead, the completion of these projects will not only enhance the county’s transportation network but also contribute to economic development and quality of life for Henry County residents. As the region continues to grow and evolve, these investments in infrastructure will play a vital role in shaping its future trajectory.
