Rodger Dale Sparks, a beloved figure in Lancaster, Kentucky, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 31, 2018, after battling a long illness. Born on May 26, 1946, to Ray Levi Sparks and Ethel Angel, Rodger’s life journey was marked by love, family, and a deep connection to his roots in Kentucky.
Early in life, Rodger married Marchita Martin and together they built a life in Ohio, where he worked as a warehouse manager for 18 years. The union blessed them with two children, Lolita Carter and Rodger Sparks. Despite the marriage ending, Rodger found lifelong love in Theresa Lednik, who brought Raymond Sparks into their lives. Theresa’s daughter, Danielle Follick, became an integral part of their blended family.
For 35 years, Rodger and Theresa resided in Lancaster, where they found joy in running the local flea market. Rodger’s passion for the flea market was evident as he interacted with patrons, relishing in the art of negotiation and the camaraderie of fellow vendors.
Rooted in the Birch Lick area, Rodger was a man of simple pleasures. He found solace in the quietude of his home by the Kentucky River, where he spent his days whittling intricate creations with a pocket knife. His craftsmanship was remarkable, with projects often taking hundreds of hours to complete. Notably, his sling shots and replicas of famous homes, like Loretta Lynn’s brother’s house, garnered admiration and praise.
In his final days, Rodger’s wish to pass away peacefully at home was granted, thanks to the unwavering care of Theresa. Surrounded by loved ones, he transitioned from this world, leaving behind a legacy of love and craftsmanship.
Survived by Theresa, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings, Rodger’s impact on his family and community is enduring. His children fondly recall his unwavering support, with one noting the regular phone calls that bridged the distance between them, serving as a constant source of strength and guidance.
Expressing gratitude for the hospice care Rodger received and honoring his wish for a simple graveside service, the family plans to lay him to rest near his childhood home on Birch Lick. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Birch Lick Cemetery for upkeep are welcomed, echoing Rodger’s connection to his roots and the importance of honoring one’s past.
As the community mourns the loss of a beloved member, Rodger’s memory lives on through the love he shared, the craftsmanship he mastered, and the values he instilled in his family. In Corinthians 13:13, it is said that faith, hope, and love endure, with love being the greatest of all. Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory is honored to oversee the arrangements for Mr. Rodger Dale Sparks, a man whose legacy will forever be cherished.
