A dilapidated 14th-century farmhouse in Puglia has been transformed into a stunning family home by London florist Kally Ellis. Ellis, known for her floral designs at prestigious events, took on the challenge of renovating the medieval building with her husband and children after selling her business.
The idea of sharing the land and the renovation project emerged when Ellis’s friends in Puglia offered a portion of their land for sale. The family, already connected to Italy through past experiences, embarked on a four-year journey to create Masseria Kalliope, a serene stone retreat nestled in olive groves.
Overcoming building challenges and bureaucratic hurdles, Ellis worked closely with local architects and craftsmen to preserve the farmhouse’s original features while infusing it with modern comforts. The property, consisting of three interconnected buildings, now offers a blend of traditional charm and contemporary design.
Ellis’s interior design approach focused on simplicity and locality, sourcing materials and furnishings from the region whenever possible. Handmade items and vintage pieces, including flea market finds from Lecce, were incorporated to add character and authenticity to the farmhouse.
The farmhouse, named after Ellis’s Greek namesake, was designed to accommodate gatherings with friends and family. Multiple dining areas, a pizza oven, a swimming pool, and lush outdoor spaces provide ample opportunities for relaxation and socializing.
Ellis’s vision for Masseria Kalliope reflects her appreciation for craftsmanship and natural beauty. The meticulous attention to detail, from terracotta drainpipes to handmade tiles, creates a cohesive and inviting atmosphere throughout the property.
Looking ahead, Ellis anticipates the garden maturing and envisions adding more shade to enhance the outdoor spaces. The evolving landscape, with its orchard, bougainvillea, and vegetable gardens, promises further growth and transformation for the farmhouse.
The completion of Masseria Kalliope marks a personal triumph for Ellis, who cherishes the journey of turning a neglected historic structure into a welcoming sanctuary. The farmhouse stands as a testament to creativity, perseverance, and a deep connection to the Italian countryside.
