Remembering Garland Sims: A Life Captured Through Photography

Garland Sims, known affectionately as “Ga Ga,” passed away at the age of 76 at his home in Youngstown on January 26, 2025. Born on May 5, 1948, he was a graduate of South High School in 1967. Following his graduation, Sims served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. Upon his return, he embarked on a career as a service lineman with Ameritech, dedicating over 30 years to the role before retiring in the early 2000s.

Outside of work, Sims was a passionate photographer, capturing moments at various city events, notably “Jazz in the Park.” His interests extended to bike riding, computers, reading, and frequent visits to the South High Flea Market in Columbus. Family and friends held a significant place in his life, often finding him socializing with his peers at the local McDonald’s or documenting family gatherings with his camera.

His legacy lives on through his daughters, Maxine D. Sims and Christine M. Sims, both residing in Columbus, along with his granddaughter, Zuri N. Sims. Sims is also survived by his siblings, aunts, uncles, and a wide circle of family and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, sister, and grandparents, his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

Visitation to honor Garland Sims will be held on February 7, 2025, at the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, with a celebration of life service following the visitation hours. The community mourns the loss of a beloved individual whose impact was felt through his photography, dedication to service, and commitment to preserving memories.

The passing of Garland Sims marks a significant loss in the Youngstown community, where he was known for his warm demeanor, love for photography, and active engagement with local events.
