Rachid Boutahir, known as Peoria’s Plantman, brings a unique approach to selling houseplants, drawing on his background as a retired mechanical engineer. With meticulous care, he ensures the health and beauty of his plants by treating them for diseases and bacteria before showcasing them at local markets like Relics in Peoria.
His passion for plants traces back to his childhood in Morocco, where he marveled at the geometric patterns and vibrant colors of leaves. Despite his mother’s initial reluctance to have plants indoors, Boutahir’s fascination only grew stronger as he began collecting plants and decorative pots once he had his own space.
Upon immigrating to the U.S. in 2012, Boutahir’s hobby flourished, catching the attention of Deb Opyd, the owner of Relics, who encouraged him to sell his plants to customers. This encouragement marked the beginning of a successful venture that eventually led to Boutahir participating in various markets, including the renowned Third Sunday Market in Bloomington.
Expanding his search for unique plants, Boutahir now explores greenhouses in Chicago and plans to venture further to Michigan and Florida in pursuit of new varieties. His shelves at Relics display an array of exotic plants, from philodendrons with diverse leaf colors to rare hoya rope plants and Chinese money plants, showcasing his dedication to offering distinctive options to plant enthusiasts.
Aside from ornamental plants, Boutahir also offers edible mushrooms that grow directly from special boxes, adding a touch of novelty to his collection. His commitment to plant care extends to growing them under specialized lights in his carport and basement, where he finds solace and relaxation in tending to his green companions.
Boutahir’s journey from a mechanical engineer to a plant enthusiast turned seller exemplifies the intersection of passion and profession, highlighting the fulfilling nature of pursuing one’s interests. As he continues to expand his business and explore new plant varieties, his story serves as an inspiration for those seeking to cultivate their hobbies into successful endeavors.
With a keen eye for unique botanical finds and a meticulous approach to plant care, Boutahir has carved a niche for himself in the local market scene, offering a refreshing perspective on the art of growing and selling houseplants.
