Eugene’s Saturday Market Celebrates 56th Season with Community Spirit

Eugene’s Saturday Market, a beloved tradition in Eugene, Oregon, is gearing up for its 56th season opening this weekend. The market will feature hundreds of booths and the inauguration of a new Slug Queen, embodying the spirit of community and sustainability.

According to Renee Thompson, the marketing manager of Eugene Saturday Market, this year’s focus will be on honoring the market’s rich history and the individuals who have been instrumental in its success over the past 56 years. Thompson emphasized the importance of supporting the market and its longstanding contributors, especially the elders who have been part of its legacy for decades.

Last year, the market paid tribute to its founder, Lotte Streisinger, by sharing her story through zines. Building on this initiative, the market aims to further expand its storytelling efforts this season. Additionally, special events such as an Earth Day celebration and a Mother’s Day giveaway are planned to engage the community.

Thompson highlighted the market’s commitment to sustainability by reintroducing eco-friendly practices that were paused during the pandemic. Vendors will offer reusable silverware that visitors can return to designated stations, promoting a greener environment within the market.

On the opening day, attendees can look forward to a diverse range of activities catering to all ages, along with a mix of new and returning booths. The highlight of the day will be the coronation of Slug Queen Sitara T. Slugshine, who takes over the title from Panda SnuggleSlug, the previous queen who stepped down prematurely.

With approximately 360 artists and businesses already registered for booth slots throughout the season, the market promises a vibrant and bustling atmosphere for visitors. The festivities commence at 10 a.m. this Saturday at the Park Blocks and market pavilion along 8th Avenue in downtown Eugene, offering a day of celebration and community engagement.

As Eugene’s Saturday Market reopens its doors, it not only marks the beginning of a new season but also symbolizes the resilience and enduring spirit of local artisans and entrepreneurs. The market’s legacy of creativity, sustainability, and community engagement continues to thrive, making it a cornerstone of Eugene’s cultural landscape.
