George L. Carney Jr.: Business Legacy in Gaming Industry

July 12, 2025  •  445 words

George L. Carney Jr., a prominent figure in the business world, has been named Newsmaker of the Year by the staff of the Taunton Gazette. At 85 years old, Carney reflects on his journey, showcasing a unique blend of modesty and confidence. Hailing from Brockton, Massachusetts, Carney has made significant strides in the industry, particularly in the realm of greyhound racing.

In 1966, Carney acquired ownership of Raynham Greyhound Park, a business initially established by his father, George Sr., and partner Russ Murray in 1941. Over the years, Carney took the reins of the operation, eventually purchasing the remaining stock from co-owner Lou Smith, a notable figure in New England's greyhound racing scene. Smith, an immigrant entrepreneur, played a pivotal role in legalizing betting in New Hampshire and running Rockingham Park.

Despite the park's success, the landscape changed with the emergence of casinos in neighboring states, leading to a decline in business. Greyhound racing was eventually banned in Massachusetts in 2010, marking the end of an era for Raynham Park. However, Carney pivoted towards a new venture, entering the competitive realm of the gaming industry.

With the passage of the Expanded Gaming Act in 2011, Carney set his sights on establishing a slot machine parlor at his 125-acre site in Brockton. While Taunton pursued a resort casino, Carney's slot parlor promised job opportunities and revenue for the town and state. His strategic partnerships and investments positioned him as a frontrunner in securing the coveted slots license.

Carney's vision extends beyond gaming, encompassing plans to reintroduce harness racing at the Brockton Fairgrounds. His diverse business portfolio includes ventures like Patriot Recycling and Earth Source Inc., showcasing his commitment to sustainability and community engagement. With a family legacy deeply rooted in entrepreneurship, Carney's children and sons-in-law actively contribute to the family enterprises.

Reflecting on his career trajectory, Carney acknowledges the influence of mentors and peers who guided him along the way. From his early days in greyhound racing to navigating the complexities of the gaming industry, Carney's journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability. His enduring ties to the local community and dedication to economic growth underscore his commitment to fostering prosperity.

As he looks towards the future, Carney remains optimistic about the prospects of his gaming ventures and the positive impact they can have on the region. With a blend of experience, foresight, and a deep-rooted passion for business, George L. Carney Jr. continues to shape the landscape of Massachusetts' entertainment and gaming industry.
