However, the market's long reign is now approaching its end. Last year, vendors received notices that the market would cease operations in June. While some are relocating to new premises, the closure poses a significant challenge for smaller boutique-style stores that may struggle to afford the transition to new locations in the competitive commercial real estate market.
Kira Silverman, co-owner of the Hillsboro Antique Mall located within the Festival Flea Market Mall, expressed sadness over the closure, noting the impact on longstanding vendors who have called the market home for years. The Hillsboro Antique Mall, which first opened in Deerfield Beach in 1997 before moving to the Festival Flea Market Mall 15 years ago, is among the businesses facing the prospect of displacement.
IMC Equity Group, a North Miami-based firm, acquired the flea market in 2018 and subsequently obtained approval from the City of Pompano Beach to rezone the land for industrial use. Orlando-based Foundry Commercial is set to transform the site into warehouses and industrial spaces, marking a significant shift in land utilization.
Despite efforts to assist vendors in finding new locations, the closure has left many scrambling to secure alternative spaces. For Silverman and her antique store, the Hillsboro Antique Mall, the impending move to Peppertree Plaza in Margate symbolizes a fresh start but also signifies the loss of a tight-knit community that characterized the flea market environment.
Reflecting on the changing landscape of retail, Silverman acknowledged the decline of traditional flea markets and antique stores as more business moves online.
